Pediatric Massage Benefits
Pediatric massage is for children and teens who may just enjoy a nice relaxing massage or those dealing with special issues. There are many pediatric massage benefits for children. For younger kids, this type of therapy has been shown to help improve sleep issues, tongue-tie recovery, nursing challenges, gastrointestinal upsets, and may help improve developmental delays. There are also great pediatric massage benefits for older kids and teens. Therapeutic massage may help our older kids improve issues such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, trauma, sports injury, and growing pains, to name a few. Think back to when you were a teenager, wouldn’t you have loved a good relaxing massage, just becuase you were a teenager?
Pediatric massage is for kids of all ages. It’s not just reserved for younger children, but can be extremely helpful to support teenagers through the tougher years. A pediatric massage benefit is that it can help balance hormones and release endorphins. When a child receives healing touch, they learn not only to relax, but to trust. The main rule during a pediatric massage session is that the child is in charge, creating an environment of trust and safety.
Is my child too young for massage?
For younger children, this type of massage is gentle and often playful. Every child is different, but it is common that during the first session with young children we will play. Play is a childs’ favorite language. Consequently, we can use toys, stuffed animals, and simple games to get to know one another. And you will be there by their side the whole time. As a result, your child will gain trust and be able to enjoy and benefit from a massage. Do not worry that your child may not sit still long enough, we’ll work together. We can work on the squirmiest of babies and toddlers. Sometimes a session may be very interactive. Pediatric massage benefits may look different from a “typical” massage, but is always a great way to help your child destress.
We recommend a shorter 30 minute massage session for children under 10. For kids over 10, a longer massage is more suited to their maturity level. It all depends on the child. Since you know your kid best, please book appropriately. And for your kids first session, please book a 60 minute session regardless of age.
What are the office policies for pediatric massage?
We kindly require that parents or guardians are present in the treatment room during the full time of their child’s session. This is a practice policy and not flexible. Teens 13 and older may discuss options. At the beginning of their session we will chat about whether or not they would like their parent or guardians present in the treatment room. Massage for child anxiety or just relaxation can often be a time when teens feel they can unwind. Consequently, they may request privacy and we will discuss this option at their appointment. Parents and caregivers are respectfully asked to be mindful during their child’s session. We may ask the parent for permissions or preferences that they will jointly decide with their child. But ultimately, one of our goals is to have your child feel that they are in charge. If there is a history that you feel we should be aware of or specific request, please feel free to email us after you book their session.
What if I want a massage too?
It’s easy to get a bit envious when your kid is sitting there enjoying a massage. Moms and dads deserve bodywork as well. So please feel free to split a massage therapy session. Please book a 60 to 90 minute massage if splitting and add in the notes section that you’d like to split a session. Parents need a little relaxation too!
